At the Taller Selva Africana in Galapa, master craftsman José Francisco Llanos — Rey Momo of the Carnaval de Barranquilla 2013 — and his team of artisans hand-make the most recognized wooden and papier-mâché masks of Carnaval, carrying on more than 50 years of tradition. Their gorilla, tiger, and bird masks, along with the iconic marimonda, have dressed comparsas, politicians, and even Shakira, who commissioned more than 150 masks for one of her shows. Tips: you can watch the artisans working live and buy one-of-a-kind pieces as souvenirs.
